Badminton at the Olympics
Badminton was introduced as a medal sport in the Olympics from the 1992 Barcelona games and has been a part of the Summer Olympic games ever since. The 1992 Olympic badminton events offered bronze medals to each of the Olympic semi-finalists wihout them having to play a play-off match. This was changed from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics onwards, and also the Mixed Doubles badminton event was added from the 1992 Atlanta games onwards.

China has been the most successful nation in badminton events at Olympics having won the maximum number of medals. Other asian countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Chinese Taipei and Thailand have good badminton players and can hope for medals at the London games. Amongst the European countries, Denmark has the best badminton players who have the potential to win some medals at the 2012 London Olympics.

Indian badminton fans would have their eyes riveted on the performance of their main hope, badminton champion Saina Nehwal of India, who is currently ranked no.3 in the world. In the 2008 Beijing Olympic games, Saina had reached the quarter-finals. This time she is a much more improved player and also is one of the world's best players as on today, and hence the chances of her winning a medal are quite bright.
Also India can hope for some good performances and have distant medal hopes from women's doubles pair of Jwala Gutta/Ashwini Ponnappa, and the mixed doubles pair of Jwala Gutta/Valiyaveetil Diju.
